Let's Get Real...Let's Get Started

So….I’ve got a million ideas to share with you about what to post, when to post, how to measure success and what NOT to do. But first, let’s talk about where you should be posting. There are so many choices!

The one thing we can all probably agree upon is that everyone has social media. Chances are that if you are reading this, you found me through social media! You probably have Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn.

So if I took a poll and asked how many of you think you put a lot of effort into social media, 80% of you would probably say yes! Some of you may say that most of your effort was on Facebook and not Instagram….or Instagram and not Facebook. Maybe you’ve tried on one platform and it doesn’t give you a good response. Maybe the rest of you just haven’t really gone for it (I hear “I don’t like social media” or “my business is mostly referral based.)

The truth is: It doesn’t matter if you like it or not – it works.

Truthbomb #2: Social Media is only getting bigger and if you aren’t on it (and in the right place) now, you will soon regret it.

But the BIGGEST reason Social Media isn’t working for you, probably isn’t your lack of desire, but rather a lack of education.

The power of social media is undeniable. It should truly be the number one business builder if you own a small business. And if you are already great and getting referrals, you’ll be blown away by social media referrals. It can easily be your number one referral source if you use it correctly. So, for most people if I said this is the easiest way to build business it's like putting marketing on autopilot. Why wouldn't you do it. Because you don't know what you're doing. So, it comes down to lack of education.

Before we get into strategies, tips, and tricks, we are going to take a step back and take some inventory. Remember how we talked about CLARITY? You want to be crystal clear on WHO you are trying to reach. I suggest that your ideal client is even whittled down to a singular person – and name him or her! Now I want you to think about that person and where you would likely find him? A bark park? The gym? The office? Doing DIY projects around the house? Now think about where she would hang out online, keeping in mind that this might not be where YOU hang out online. This is one of the biggest mistakes I see: focusing on the social media platform that you enjoy the most, even though it might not be the one where you customers are spending their time.

When your ideal customers are on these platforms, what are they doing? What are they looking for? Where are they spending their time? How are they interacting?

Let's Break It Down....

It’s probably fair to say that Facebook is still king. With a daily active user count of over 1.4 Billion, most adults in America are on Facebook. 68% of U.S. adults now report that they are Facebook users, of which 75% use Facebook daily. Instagram has seen huge growth! With more than 500 million daily users, over 300 million users check Instagram Stories daily. And…80% of users follow at least one business on the platform. This is an incredible opportunity for businesses, if used correctly!

And…after you consider they type of person and where they are spending their time, see if it aligns with the demographic table below.

Your To Do List:

  1. Clearly define who your ideal customer is

  2. Determine where he or she hangs out online

Then the fun and conversations (and conversions into your customers) begins!
